HD DSLR video – Advanced HD movie making

Shooting HD video with DSLR cameras is a phenomenon that is not going to go away. As it gets ever bigger in the market, if you don’t get on board now, you’ll get left behind.

If you don’t know your shutter speed from your frame rates, or your shotgun from lavalier then you need to come on this course.

Suitable for anyone with an HD DSLR camera, this course will take you from getting the camera into movie mode through to your first steps in editing the footage and everything in between.

On the day you’ll learn the importance of accurate white balance and why in-camera processing is the work of the devil. We’ll also show you how to take your filming to the next level by explaining and demonstrating the major accessories you need to successfully switch from stills to video and make your video clips stand out from the crowd.

We’ll walk you through the minefield of capturing audio and you’ll see the benefits of using external audio recording systems to ensure you have the best audio quality.

We’ll also look at constructing a shoot and deciding the shots you need to get to tell the story by building a storyboard or shot list. This will make sure that not only is editing easier but you’ll also not miss any crucial shots.

The editing section will introduce to NLE software like Final Cute Pro or Adobe Premier, show you how to setup your system for efficient editing being it a mobile workstation like a laptop or a larger home desktop system. You’ll also learn how to backup your files sensibly so you never lose any data. Finally, we’ll show you how to output your film ready to share with the world.

Aim of the course

If you’re interested in making full use of the HD movie functions on your DSLR, this course can help get you there. If you’re a professional photographer or committed enthusiast you will learn everything you need to know to go out and start shooting.
We will cover:

  • Camera setup – frame rates, shutter speeds etc
  • Picture Styles – using and creating
  • Accessories to go from stills to video
  • The importance of a storyboard or shot list
  • Editing in Final Cut Pro introduction – system setup, import, audio sync, backup and output

Photographers wanting to take their movie making further. It is especially useful for those using EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 7D and EOS 60D cameras. If you want to introduce HD movie to your portfolio of skills or you plan on shooting the next Cannes festival winning short film, this is the course for you.

10 Second Tips:

IS and tripods

Although the recent IS lenses suggest you can leave the Image Stabiliser turned on when attached to a tripod without adversely affecting the results, our experience shows that if are confident your tripod is steady, you're better off turning the IS system off in order to obtain sharper results.

Don't scare your subjects

By default, EOS cameras have focus beep enabled. In quiet situations like churches or when photographing wildlife, make sure you disable it in the first menu tab to avoid ruining the ceremony or scaring away your subjects.

Shutter speed and camera shake

To avoid camera shake in your images without using IS, make sure you use a shutter speed no slower than the reciprocal of the focal length of the lens you're using. For example with a 200mm lens, use a shutter speed no slower than 1/200sec.

Camera orientation for HD Movies

When shooting movies on any of the EOS models that feature HD movie shooting, make sure you keep the camera in landscape orientation rather than being tempted to shoot in portrait orientation. Reason? It's pretty hard to turn your TV on its side!

Don't shoot without a card

Make sure to switch off the 'instore demo mode' of your EOS by setting it to not shoot unless a memory card is in the camera. It's in the red tabbed menus on recent cameras under "Shoot w/o card". Simply make sure it is set to "disable".

Burst rate and Noise Reduction

If you're planning to shoot burst sequences at high ISO settings, make sure you turn off the High ISO noise reduction setting in the custom functions. Leaving it on will dramatically reduce the burst capacity on some cameras. On the EOS-1D Mark IV, only 'Strong' will reduce the burst rate.

Avoiding camera shake

Pixels in digital cameras are smaller than the grain on film emulsion. For this reason, any subject motion is more likely to record as image blur at a given shutter speed. To avoid this, shoot at a faster shutter speed than you would have done with film.
